Mock Cine: GODS AND SHADOWS
Written for The Narrative Department’s Game Writing Masterclass, GODS AND SHADOWS is a meta-commentary game proof of concept where iconic video game characters have retired from their legendary “careers” of violence, espionage, and adventure. Now living among ordinary humans, they struggle to adapt to mundane routines such as grocery shopping, dating, parenting — all while confronting what remains of their identities when purpose, power, and player control are gone. It’s a darkly comedic exploration of post-heroic life and the quiet absurdity of normalcy.
The player, as KRATOS (God of War, 2018), is exploring the grocery store’s “Imported Wines” section in free roam mode after his son, ATREUS, makes his first hunting kill. Upon interacting with the glowing Ambrosia Reserve bottle, control is relinquished and the cutscene begins.
Fight Scene: SPLENDOR VS SILENTIUM
This scene was written as a fight sequence for a writing test featuring two previously established (in-house) characters whose history and philosophies collide inside a ruined cathedral. It’s structured like a late-game boss encounter, with cinematic beats that bracket three escalating gameplay phases. The piece balances spectacle with character voice.
The HUD tags, QTE prompts, and reward unlocks are intentional as in-world cues that demonstrate how narrative and mechanics interlock.
